💻 Shadow IT – Innovation or a threat?

In almost every organisation, employees adopt tools and apps outside of official IT approval—this is Shadow IT. Think file-sharing apps, collaboration platforms, or productivity tools downloaded without going through proper channels.

On one hand, Shadow IT can drive innovation. Teams find faster, more efficient ways to work, often adopting tools that fill gaps traditional IT can’t address quickly enough.

But there’s a flip side:

🔐 Security risks – Unapproved apps may lack proper encryption, updates, or compliance.

📉 Data loss – Files and customer data can slip outside of company control.

⚠️ IT blind spots – If IT teams don’t know the tools being used, they can’t support or secure them.

The real question is: Should organisations ban Shadow IT entirely—or embrace it with the right governance?

✅ Educating staff on the risks

✅ Building open communication so IT can guide rather than block
