š Internet Censorship ā Protection or Oppression?
The internet was once celebrated as the ultimate platform for free expression and open information. But today, internet censorship is one of the most hotly debated issues worldwide.
On one hand, governments and platforms argue that censorship can protect citizens from harmful content: hate speech, misinformation, illegal activities, and even cybercrime. Itās framed as a way to keep people safe and maintain social order.
On the other hand, too much control risks silencing dissent, limiting access to information, and undermining democratic freedoms. Once censorship becomes a tool of power, it can be used to suppress voices that challenge authority or dominant narratives.
So where do we draw the line?
How do we balance safety with freedom of expression?
Who decides what is āharmfulā and what is simply āuncomfortableā?
And should a handful of tech platforms have the power to dictate what billions of people can (or canāt) see?
As the digital world continues to shape our societies, these questions have never been more important.
š What are your thoughts? Does internet censorship primarily protect us, or does it oppress us? Where should the boundaries lie?
